A Democrat is a member of the Democratic Party, one of the two major political parties in the United States. The Democratic Party is the older of the two parties, founded in 1824. The Democratic Party is often called “the party of the people” because it is seen as more supportive of the needs of average Americans than the Republican Party. The party supports a wide range of social and economic issues, including: equal opportunity, environmental protection, gun control, and healthcare reform.
